Zeolite

Updated on 06/02/2025
Définition
Sens technique

The zeolite family is a group of crystalline aluminosilicate minerals with a 3D honeycomb microstructure. Natural zeolites are one of the most common groups of aluminosilicates in volcanic sedimentary rocks, formed as a result of the deposition and alteration of volcanic tuffs in saline, alkaline lake deposits and open hydrological systems.

Zeolites are noted for their ion-exchange capacity and reversible dehydration. Their honeycomb structure encloses interconnected cavities and channels filled with hydrated alkali and alkaline earth cations and water molecules. The mineral's high surface area, high ion-exchange capacity, hydration / rehydration and adsorption capacity makes it an excellent molecular sieve, valued in a wide range of end applications ranging from cat litter to water purification.

Zeolites are natural solutions which confer a range of benefits that foster a cleaner, healthier environment.

In crop production, zeolite is used  in a large range of plant nutrition and soil improvement products where it enables the slow release of nutrients and  better water retention.

Microfiltration

Updated on 16/01/2023
Définition
Sens technique

Microfiltration is a low pressure membrane process used for the filtration of colloids with a size between 0.1 and 10 microns. This process is used in particular for the pre-treatment of water to be refined.

Hypochlorite

Updated on 16/01/2023
Définition
Sens technique

Bodies containing the CIO- radical, hypochlorites can replace chlorine in its applications in water disinfection. Two forms are used after dilution or dissolution in water:

° sodium hypochlorite NaClO (or bleach)

° calcium hypochlorite Ca(ClO)2

Flocculant

Updated on 16/01/2023
Définition
Sens technique

A mineral or organic product designed to encourage the flocculation of previously coagulated materials present in the water to be treated. There are mineral flocculants (activated silica, etc.), organic flocculants of natural origin (alginates) and, for the most frequent, synthetic flocculants (polyelectrolytes, etc.).

Clarification

Updated on 16/01/2023
Définition
Sens technique

A set of treatments to remove suspended solids, turbidity and colour from water. It is generally carried out according to one of the following schemes:

° Direct filtration,

° coagulation followed by flocculation on a filter (called "collage"),

° coagulation, flocculation, decantation or flotation, filtration
