Substitute compounds formed by the reaction of chlorine Cl2 with ammoniacal nitrogen NH3, responsible for the "chlorine smell" or "pool smell" of drinking water.

Three types: monochloramine NH2Cl, dichloramineNHCl2 and trichloramine NCl3.

In water chlorinated at a dose below the critical point, the residual chlorine is entirely in the form of chloramines (or combined chlorine).

Are sometimes used in disinfection (as in the USA), if a slow and prolonged action is desired.
