Calcium-carbonate equilibrium

Définition
Sens technique

The state of a water whose pH and calcium, hydrogen carbonate and carbonate contents are such that, when brought into contact with limestone, its characteristics do not change.

There are many graphical methods for determining the equilibrium pH (or saturation pH) of water of a given chemical composition (e.g. Hallopeau and Dubin graph).

Water is therefore in equilibrium if its pH is equal to the equilibrium pH (pHs), it is aggressive if pH < pHs, it is incrusting if pH > pHs. The temperature also influences the equilibrium.
