Greenish-yellow gas in its normal state with the chemical formula Cl2, irritating and suffocating, which is not corrosive in its pure and dry state. In the presence of moisture it becomes extremely corrosive.

In water, chlorine gas is rapidly hydrolysed to hypochlorous acid (HOCl).
