Geographical entity having homogenous geological, climatic and topographic characteristics, and therefore an assumed homogeneity of the ecological functioning. Conventionally used for terrestrial ecosystems and for understanding vegetation associations, ecoregions can be applied to aquatic ecosystems, this is called freshwater ecoregion.Source
