Crop rotations

Updated on 25/02/2019
Définition
Sens commun

Periods between crop rotations, during which the soil is usually exposed and vulnerable to runoff, causing the migration of nitrates into water, but also accelerating its erosion and degrading its quality. Some crops, planted at this period (and called intercrops by extension) can reduce this problem.

Nitrate-fixing intermediate crops

Updated on 25/02/2019
Définition
Sens commun

Specific cultivation, planted during the period between crops rotation, when bare ground is usually exposed. These selected crops are fast growing species (white mustard, radish, canola, phacelia, vetch, trefoil, etc.) allowing to fix the excess nitrogen that is still on the ground, in order to prevent it to migrate to the groundwater or to the streams, washed away by rain. These crops also have the benefit of reducing the soil erosion and enhancing biodiversity.

Cover crops

Updated on 25/02/2019
Définition
Sens commun

The vegetation that covers the ground. The vegetation cover of a soil is an agri-environmental good practice which induces benefits, such as the mitigation of nitrogen pollution, soil protection and a greater biodiversity.

Nitrogen balance

Updated on 25/02/2019
Définition
Sens technique

Calculation allowing to highlight areas threatened by nitrogen pollution. The nitrogen balance aims to estimate the excess part on an area, evaluating the difference between the nitrogen inputs (mineral fertilization, animal waste, urban and industry inflows, atmospheric inputs) and the exports (consumption of plants, losses in gaseous form).

Green algae

Updated on 27/02/2019
Définition
Sens commun

Chlorophyllous aquatic plant having no leaves, no roots, no vessels, no flowers, no seeds, whose main photosynthetic pigments are chlorophylls a and b. As the name suggests, they are usually green in color.

Agri-environmental grants

Updated on 25/02/2019
Définition
Sens commun
Financial accompanying measure, achieved within the framework of the agro environmental and climatic measures (MAEC), offered to farmers to encourage them to turn to an agriculture being more environment-friendly. This financial aid has to be approved by a regional committee, and its payment implies acting in accordance with a precise mission statement, in relation with the performed changes. Its amount is estimated through the calculation of the additional costs, or by the loss of income caused by the agro environmental practices.

Charges/fees for non-point source pollution

Updated on 06/09/2018
Définition
Sens commun
Amount of money paid by producers of plant protection products. This fee takes into account the level of toxicity and dangerousness of substances used in agricultural and gardening activities. It encourages users to choose less polluting products.

Wastewater re-use

Updated on 06/09/2018
Définition
Sens commun
Use of wastewater, in agriculture for example, after passing through the treatment plant, instead of being discharged into watercourses, bodies of water or coastal waters. This re-use allows, on the one hand, mobilising an additional water resource and, on the other, protecting the water receiving the treated wastewater.

Agricultural pollution

Updated on 06/09/2018
Définition
Sens commun
Pollution resulting from agricultural activities. There are two types of agricultural pollution: point source pollution, which may be the consequence of accidental handling of products or pollution from livestock buildings; non-point source pollution, resulting from poor fertilisation practices or excessive phytosanitary treatments. Agricultural pollution can also result from poor land management and spatial and plot planning that no longer limits erosion or pollutant transfers on a catchment area scale.
