Circalittoral zone

Updated on 04/12/2018
Définition
Sens technique
Space between the limit of the infralittoral zone (lower limit of life for the majority of multicellular algae) and the depth at which photosynthesis becomes impossible due to the too low amount of light. The depth of the circalittoral zone, generally a hundred meters, depends on the more or less transparency of water. The plant species that develop there are the algae most tolerant to minimum amount of light, known as sciaphilous plants. The circalittoral zone has a low environmental variability, and its temperature varies little between seasons.
