Vertical stage of the marine benthic zone where ecological conditions, depending on the position in relation to sea level, are substantially constant or regularly vary between two critical levels delimiting the boundary of the stage. Benthic stages have characteristic populations and their boundaries are revealed by a change in these populations in the vicinity of critical levels indicating the limit conditions of the stages.
