Risk related to flood-prone areas

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens technique
Injury to life, health or damage that may occur in floodplains. In those, we can distinguish several levels of risk depending on the severity of damage to be feared, taking into account the flooding height, flow velocity (for the flooding considered) and the vulnerability of exposed sites.

Flood forecasting

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens technique
Analysis aiming to determine the expected flood characteristics: flow, level, time of onset and duration of these floods at different sites in the drainage basin. Modelling is used for this purpose. The forecasts are based on series of statistical analyses of historical floods and on the knowledge of flood storage areas.

Définition
Sens technique
Plan for delimiting, at municipal or inter-municipal level, areas exposed to predictable natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, avalanches or ground movements. The Risk Exposure Plan (REP) sets out the appropriate measures to prevent

Définition
Sens commun

Period of lowest water levels in streams and groundwater (usually summer for rainfall regimes).

Sens technique

Exceptionally low flow period of a watercourse, or exacerbation of its low water (sometimes assimilated to low seasonal flows). Low water is therefore considered to be a limited period in the year when the flows drop lower than a statistically calculated threshold value, function of each stream.

Critical low flow

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens technique

Low flow value below which the supply of drinking water for essential needs for human and animal life, and for the survival of the species found in the environment, are endangered. At this low-flow level, all possible measures to restrict consumption and

Warning level (or threshold) flow

Updated on 26/10/2022

Sens technique

"Threshold" value of the flow that triggers the first restrictions for some activities. These measures are taken at the initiative of the prefectural authority in connection with a crisis cell and in accordance with a crisis plan.
