Hydrological gauging station

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens technique
Measuring station located on streams with natural flow regime (including glacial or groundwater regimes). Watercourses, even strongly influenced, also fall into this category. Non-hydrological gauging stations are those located on rivers whose regime is totally artificial (irrigation

Associated station

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens technique
Differs depending on the type of the measuring station. For a twin-gauge station, the station associated with the "mother" station is the daughter station and vice versa. For a virtual station, the associated stations are those used to reconstruct the flow rate.

Flood-storage area

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens commun
Area where overflows can spread in the floodplain and which plays a significant role in flood control. Mapping these flood-storage areas allows better land use management in the valleys.

Flood storage area

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens technique
Natural or man-made space over which water is spreading when rivers overflow in their floodplain. The temporary storage of water reduces the overflow by increasing its flow time. This storage is part of the functioning of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Generally speaking, a flood storage area is meant for little or non-urbanized and little developed areas.

Low-flow replenishment

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens commun

Action to increase a stream flow rate during low water periods using a hydraulic structure (dam reservoir or transfer by gravity or by pumping, etc).

Extractable soil water

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens commun

Quantity of water that the soil can hold and return immediately to the roots of plants. It is expressed in millimeters (mm).

Sens technique

The extractable soil water (RU) is the fraction of the soil water reserve available to the plant, or that which can be extracted by the plant through root suction. It is expressed in millimetres of water.

Flood forecasting

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens technique
Analysis aiming to determine the expected flood characteristics: flow, level, time of onset and duration of these floods at different sites in the drainage basin. Modelling is used for this purpose. The forecasts are based on series of statistical analyses of historical floods and on the knowledge of flood storage areas.

Définition
Sens commun

Period when a low water flow is observed.

River module

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens technique
Multi-year mean flow at a point in a stream. The module is assessed by the average annual discharge over a period of observation long enough to be representative of the measured or reconstructed flow rates.
