Hydrology

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens commun
Study of the physical, chemical and biological properties of waters located on the surface of the Earth and under ground, especially in terms of their formation, movement, distribution in time and space and their interaction with the inert and living environment. Continental hydrology studies the streams, wetlands and bodies of water, groundwater and solid water bodies on land masses, while marine hydrology is identified with oceanography.

Drying-out

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens commun

Temporary drying out of a watercourse or of a river section.

Source
According to Poitou-Charentes Regional Council
Sens technique

As part of the monitoring carried out by the National Observatory of Low Water, a watercourse is considered in a dry period when the water is totally evaporated or infiltrated on more than 50% of the reporting station.

Water deficit

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens technique
Cumulative difference between potential evapotranspiration (soil evaporation and transpiration from vegetation) and precipitation during a certain period in which the precipitation is the smaller of the two.

Water year

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens technique
A 12-month period that begins after the usual month of the lowest waters. Depending on local weather patterns, the water year may begin on dates different from the regular calendar, but in France, it usually starts in September.

Energy of a watercourse

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens technique
Kinetic energy of a moving water body. This energy is calculated as follows: specific gravity of water by flow rate Q (m3.s-1) X slope S. The potential energy (PE) of a stream is the energy of this flooding watercourse calculated for the bankfull flow rate (expressed in watt.m-1, where QPB is the bankfull flow). To compare streams of different sizes, we

Classified flow rate

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens technique
Statistics on characteristic flows. We can express the value of the classified flow not exceeded over n days per year on the average (DCNn) or the value of the classified flow exceeded over n days per year (DCXn).

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens commun

Part of atmospheric precipitation (rain, snow) which flows on the ground surface and drainage basin slopes.

Annual average residence time

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens technique
Time needed to complete the theoretical water renewal of a body of water, on average, over a calendar year. The residence time of water, expressed in days, can be calculated by the following formula: total capacity / annual discharge of rivers that feed the body of water.

Average depth

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens technique
Average water depth in metres. The average depth of a body of water is calculated by dividing the volume by the surface area, both determined at the average elevation for a natural body of water, and at the normal operating elevation for an artificial body of water.
