Directive 79/923/EEC of the Council of 30 October 1979 concerning the quality required of shellfish waters. It concerns the quality of shellfish waters and applies to those coastal and brackish waters designated by the Member States as needing protection or improvement in order to support shellfish life and growth (bivalve and gastropod molluscs) and thus to contribute to the high quality of shellfish products directly edible to human beings. Member States shall determine the values of parameters applicable to shellfish waters and which are listed in the Annex to this Directive. Directive 78/659/EEC of the Council of 18 July 1978 concerns the quality of fresh waters needing protection or improvement in order to sustain fish populations. It concerns the quality of fresh waters and applies to those waters designated by the Member States as needing protection or improvement in order to sustain fish life; it does not apply to water used for intensive fish farming. Member States shall determine the values of the parameters applicable either to salmonid or cyprinid areas. Marine animal characterized by a fivefold radial symmetry, protected, depending on the species, by calcareous spikes or more or less developed calcite plates. Echinoderms include the starfishes, crinoid (sea daffodil), sea urchins, sea cucumbers and brittle stars. They have tubular "feet" and are able to move (very) slowly.
