A filtering lamellibranch mollusc with a calcareous shell with two lateral valves (bivalve). Bivalve molluscs are separated into two classes: burrowing bivalves that live at the sediment surface or buried in it (carpetshells, cockles, clams), and non-burrowing bivalves that live attached to a hard substrate (oysters, mussels).
