River basin management plan

Planning document for water management, established for each basin or group of basins, which sets out basic guidelines to achieve sound and sustainable water resources management, determines the objectives for water bodies and plans the necessary provisions to achieve the environmental objectives, to prevent the deterioration of water status and give fundamental orientations. The SDAGEs, approved for the first time in 1996 under the Water Act of 1992, have been updated in late 2009 to meet the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). They now include management plans under this Directive. The SDAGE is developed and adopted by the basin committee and approved by the Basin Coordinator Prefect. The River-basin district level is the technical body in charge of drafting the constitutive elements of the SDAGE. It is established for a six-year management cycle (2010-2015, 2016-2021, 2022-2027, etc) and is accompanied by a programme of measures that identifies key actions to achieve the defined objectives. Programmes and administrative decisions in the field of water as well as departmental quarry plans (SDC) must be compatible or made compatible with the provisions of the SDAGE. The Local development plans (SCOTs), local urbanisation plans (PLUs) and municipal maps must be compatible or made compatible, within three years, with the fundamental orientations and quality and quantity objectives defined by the SDAGE.
