Water and environmental management
Parameter
Assessment operation
Control operation
All on-site measurements, samples and/or analyses, which are performed at a control point for a specified period, in accordance with a control protocol, for assessing a quality element and producing observation data.
Quality element
Partial view of the water status, which gives rise to control operations, the results of which are used by an assessment to determine quality indicators. The quality element is described by a parameter or set of parameters (parameter group). The list of quality elements is defined in Annex 5 of the
Operational monitoring
Control to establish, as part of the water status monitoring programme, the status of water bodies which are not fully guaranteed to achieve their environmental objectives, and assess the effectiveness of programmes of measures on them.
Surveillance monitoring
Control aiming to assess, as part of the water status monitoring programme, the overall status of water and (long-term) evolution trends of the river basin, these changes being either natural or caused by human activities.
Investigative monitoring
Control, as part of the water status monitoring programme, designed to look for the pressure which causes an observed degradation. It is carried out when the reasons for any significant alteration of the environment are unknown, to determine the causes for a water body not meeting the environmental objectives (when operational control has not yet been established), or for monitoring
Additional monitoring
Control of surface waters, as part of the water status monitoring programme, listed in the Register of protected areas : intakes of drinking water intended for human consumption (more than 100 m3/day on the average), water bodies of species habitat and protection areas (which are included in the operational monitoring programme when they may not meet their environmental goals).
