Définition
Sens technique

Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000 establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy, commonly known as the Water Framework Directive (WFD). It sets out environmental objectives and deadlines to improve the ecological and chemical status of surface water bodies as well as the quantitative status and chemical status of groundwater bodies. Some water bodies created by human activity or having their characteristics fundamentally modified by human activity, may be designated respectively as artificial water bodies (AWB) or heavily modified water bodies (HMWB). In this case, their characteristics and ecological functioning are described by an ecological potential. The WFD especially sets the general goal to achieve "

Good status

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens réglementaire
Goal to be achieved for all waters by 2015, according to the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC, unless postponement or definition of a less strict target. The good status of surface water is achieved when both its ecological status and chemical status are at least "good". The good status of groundwater is achieved when both its quantitative status and chemical status are at least "good…

Less stringent objective

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens technique
If unable to achieve "good status" for waters (in accordance with the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC) or when, on the basis of a cost-benefit analysis, the measures necessary to achieve the good status of aquatic environments have a disproportionate cost, an objective less stringent than good status can be defined. The difference between this objective and good status must be the smallest possible, focusing only on a limited number of criteria.

Heavily modified water body (HMWB)

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens technique
A body of surface water which, as a result of physical alterations by human activity, is substantially changed in character. Due to these changes, the water body cannot achieve good status. If the activities cannot be questioned for technical or economic reasons, the water body can be designated as heavily modified and the objectives to be achieved, in accordance with the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC…

Définition
Sens technique
Site on a body of water or a river selected for the good quality of the aquatic ecosystem which gives a reference for characterizing the quality of other bodies of water or rivers.

Measurement site

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens technique
Characteristic and representative subspace of the measuring station clearly identified and located to perform repetitive measurements for having an in-depth knowledge of the environment at the location of the station. Measurement sites are also places on the station where the sampler will make, whenever possible, its samples or in situ measurements. A site is usually dedicated to a substrate: water, sediments, Bryophytes,…

Sample

Updated on 26/10/2022
Définition
Sens commun

In the strict sense, it is taking a sample (sampling) for analysis or testing. More generally, water withdrawals include all abstractions related to activities generated by agriculture, industry (including energy), drinking water supply, or others (authorized spring of mineral water, production of artificial snow). In this case, the withdrawals are grouped into 3 subtypes corresponding to the affected environment: surface water withdrawals, groundwater abstractions, seawater withdrawals.

Biotope protection order

Updated on 18/03/2020
Définition
Sens technique

Order established by the department prefect to implement measures to conserve biotopes such as ponds, marshes, swamps, heathland, dunes, groves, hedgerows, lawns and any natural formation not exploited by humans since these biotopes are necessary for reproduction, feeding, rest, survival of protected species. The biotope protection order is particularly adapted to deal with emergency situations of destruction or significant modification of an area.
